Your Complete Guide To Vacationing in California

Vacationing in California can be whatever you want it to be. Many people think of California in terms of its big cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego, but California is also full of mountains, lakes, coastal forests, and much more. One of the best ways to vacation in California is off the beaten path with camping and glamping. Let's take a look at some of the California regions to consider in your vacation plans.

Northern California Wine Country

California is a huge state with several unique regions. One of the most famous is the wine country found in the northern part. Driving the Pacific Coast Highway should be on everyone's bucket list. The view of the rugged coast and redwoods can't be missed. When you get to the other side, you'll find yourself in the rolling wine country of Napa and Sonoma counties. There are a number of campsites in CA where you can settle in for the night, including the Mystic Mountain Petrified Camp near Santa Rosa. This area is just north of San Francisco and in the central part of Sonoma County. Settle in with wonderful views, and explore the wineries during the day. The town of Santa Rosa itself is bursting with culture, including top restaurants and craft breweries.

Central Coast Valley and Beaches

The Central Coast area of California is just south of the Bay Area. Santa Cruz is one of the most popular destinations here. Aside from the beach and surfing opportunities, Santa Cruz is well-known for its bustling boardwalk area. Snag a camping spot in the hills overlooking Monterey Bay, and you can cap off your day of surfing or beachcombing with an amazing view as you sit by your campfire. Going inland from Santa Cruz, you'll find Yosemite National Park, Kings Canyon National Park, Sequoia National Park, and the Sierra National Forest. Endless opportunities abound for hiking, camping, swimming in lakes, and picnicking.

Southern California Desert Inland

It's never a bad idea to visit the hotspots in Southern California like Hollywood and LA. However, the sculpted deserts away from the cities yield a sense of adventure and beautiful views under clear night skies. Joshua Tree National Park is a must-visit spot with surreal landscapes that you won't find anywhere else. Enjoy camping in this rugged terrain, then hop over to Palm Springs and experience the top-notch restaurants and relaxing culture. Head over to San Diego at the end of your vacation to experience the white-sand beaches.

Planning Your California Adventure

Along with deciding which region to visit in California, you'll need to make some other preparations. Some of it depends on when you decide to go. For example, if you decide to go in the winter, you'll need to look for cold weather campsites. These sites will offer floors for your tent as well as a fly for additional insulation and a heater option to keep you warm at night. Winter camping is definitely more work than summer camping, but it can be just as fun when you're prepared. In any season, bring appropriate clothing for the weather.

Covid-19 Preparations

Travel plans tend to have a bit of uncertainty with the pandemic. It's important to pay attention to all regional alerts and precautions. If the area you're visiting has issued a stay-home order or prohibited travel from other states, you'll want to know this in advance of making plans. Call and keep in touch with your camping or glamping host as you prepare for your stay. Discuss any check-in policies and make certain of what's available at your site. Water should generally be readily available, but many hosts are also providing disinfectants and cleaning materials. Keep an eye on your own health before leaving. If you, or anyone in your group, start feeling sick, then you should reconsider your travel plans. If you end up getting exposed to Covid-19 in your area, you should also reconsider any travel plans until after a self-quarantine period of 14 days.

Plan ahead for your California camping or glamping adventure by deciding on a region to visit and taking all the necessary precautions in preparing to visit the area. Always make sure to leave your campsite the way you found it and disinfect regularly.
