Welcoming you to Malaysia

Where Gumbo Was #421

There are many reasons to visit Malaysia: cultural attractions, beautiful beaches and islands to explore, colorful festivals, fantastic cuisine, and exotic animals, including orangutans, proboscis monkeys, and pygmy elephants.

Another reason I can highly recommend Malasia is its warm, friendly, and approachable people. Also, almost everyone speaks English. Because of this, Malaysia is easy to navigate.

The official religion is Islam. Buddhism and Hinduism are also commonly practiced in Malaysia. Near Kuala Lumpur are the Batu Caves, one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside of India.

Approaching the shrine, you will first see the 140-foot statue of Lord Murugan. There is a long stairway to the temple. At the top of the 272 steps is the entrance of the cave. The caves, filled with ornate and intricately carved statues, became a shrine in the late 1800s.

An excellent way to meet locals is by purchasing street food or chatting with store clerks. Everywhere you’ll find colorful surroundings and friendly people.

You might also enjoy spending a day discovering Malaysia’s famous art. For example, Batik is textile art with beautiful designs drawn on the fabric with a unique tool leaving behind a waxy substance. In the center of the designs, artists dye the fabric. The material later becomes everything from clothing to table linens.

Malaysia is also famous for its pewter, which is the world’s finest.

71It is mainly produced at the Royal Selangor Pewter Factory, located just outside Kuala Lumpur; it is the largest single manufacturer of fine pewter globally. Tours are available to understand the process better.

Kuala Lumpur is a fantastic destination. Make sure and visit The Petronas Towers, the tallest twin towers in the world. From the observation tower, the view is magnificent.

Malaysia is an exotic and beautiful country filled with fantastic historical finds, modern cities, and, most of all, friendly and welcoming people.

And congratulations to George G and PortMoresby, who both recognized the country and solved the puzzle!
