Wat Sai Thai, Thailand

Krabi in Thailand is a very curious island indeed. With a dominant Muslim population but numerous sites of worship for Buddhists, boasting the sophistication of Chiang Mai combined with the merry coastal vibes of Phuket, and attracting tourists from all over the world, this place can get rather confusing and overwhelming at times.

So I opted for the easiest way out of the muddle by getting a local travel agent to suggest the must-see spots which I could comfortably cover over the two days I was there. It was fortunate that my itinerary began with a visit to the beautiful Wat Sai Thai, since all the tours for the day had already departed.

The Sleeping Buddha is a common sight in South East Asia, but to catch him in repose in the midst of a karst forest is quite the spiritual experience- even if one is atheist or agnostic by nature. A walk around the shrines does the body, mind and soul a world of good, especially in the torpor engendered by the midday sun. I daresay this was the favourite location for the Enlightened One to have ever been caught sleeping!
