What must have started out as somebody's joking 'what if,' Vilnius Airport, in Lithuania's capital has put up a holiday tree that has the usual shape, but not the usual contents: Instead of pine needles, pretty ornaments and garlands, it's made up of confiscated knives, guns, bullets and lighters.
The dismal curiosity, which even has a blood-stained knife on it, is topped by a star made of knife blades. Airport workers took a bit more than two weeks to build the 1.5-meter display.
Vilnius was named 2019 cheapest European city break destination by several lists, and has seen quite a bit of business passing through the airport. An airport spokesman said the tree was meant to be a graphic warning about aviation security: “So if you don’t want your personal, yet prohibited, belongings to land on next year’s Christmas tree, better check out the baggage requirements before you pack for your next flight.”
