Viking's Elbe River Cruise-not-a-cruise

More than most other European cruise rivers, the Elbe is known for low-water issues that can make it difficult for cruise ships to make the run, but Viking River Cruises is now selling a 'cruise' for which low-water is no problem, because the ships don't move.

Viking's itinerary for its Cities Along the Elbe trip (I can't really call it a cruise, can I) calls for two nights in Berlin, followed by a tour of Potsdam by bus before arriving on the third night at Wittenberg, where one of Viking's special low-water ships is docked. That's home for two nights.

Then, while passengers travel by bus to Meissen and Dresden, Viking moves their belongings to the identical cabin on the other ship, moored at Dresden. On Day 8, a bus ride to the final stop, Prague.

Turning a bug into a feature, Viking explains that "Unlike our traditional cruises, every night is spent in port, providing an opportunity to experience enriching Viking evening excursions," and describes the overnights as "Viking ships showcasing their elegance as find floating hotels."

Well, whatever floats your boat...

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
