A railroad construction project in Gothenberg, Sweden has revealed the remains of three ships from the 1600s that may have belonged to the Swedish East India Company.
The ships were found at the site of a former harbor area of the city that was filled in in the 1800s, and may have been left there on purpose as part of landfill.
The rail project's archaeologist says "Their size is such that they were probably cargo boats that were used to transport goods on shorter distances. It will be interesting now to see if we can find the remains of the cargo, for example in the layers between the planks, which could then show what they transported."
Efforts are underway to salvage as much as possible as the construction continues.
