Spring, and a list of British gardens to see

It's still February and gardens may not be on everyone's mind yet, but the groundhog has given hope of early spring and glorious green and other colors. Ahead of that, the Guardian (UK) has come up with a list of a dozen suggestions for those in range of a visit.

The choices, spread across the UK, range from a sunken fern garden to an 18th-century orangery, and from carefully-tended beds to almost jungle-like profusion. The list follows, along with a link to the Guardian's article.

  • Castle Howard, North Yorkshire
  • Borde Hill, West Sussex
  • RHS Hyde Hall, Essex
  • Pensthorpe, Norfolk
  • Eltham Palace, London
  • Seaton Deleval Hall, Northumberland
  • Winterbourne House, Birmingham
  • Attadale Gardens, Wester Ross
  • Dunham Massey, Greater Manchester
  • Lost Gardens of Heligan, Cornwall
  • Penrhyn Castle, Gwynedd
  • Glenarm Castle, County Antrim

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
