Speed cameras coming for Venice canals

After a spate of serious accidents involving speeding boats in Venice's crowded canals, the city will bein installing speed cameras to identify and ticket offenders who break the rules.

Local lawmakers have backed the move, which will apply the laws that govern roads to the waterways. One legislator told Italian media that “The roads [of Venice] are the lagoon canals so boat traffic must be controlled more effectively.”

The speed limits are 4 miles per hour on the main canals, and 3 miles per hour in smaller ones, but the rules are frequently defied or ignored, as are the tickets that have been issued and which are piled up in a backlog of administrative disputes and backlogs.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
