Archaeologists tunneling through Civita Guiliana, an ancient suburb of ancient Pompeii have found almost intact in the portico of a stable that was unearthed in 2018 where remains of three horses, one still in harness, were found.
A statement from the Pompeii archaeological park describes it as "A large ceremonial chariot with four wheels, along with its iron components, beautiful bronze and tin decorations, mineralised wood remains and imprints of organic materials (from the ropes to the remains of floral decoration)." The statement goes on to say that nothing like it has been found before in such condition.
The site was being excavated through a series of tunnels aimed at blocking illegal activity in the area, which has included thieves digging their own tunnels to steal as-yet-unexcavated artifacts for sale. The park statement says that thieves had tunneled past the find on both sides, but missed the treasure.
