Planters in Vulcan, Alberta

Besides its recent ties to Star Trek, Vulcan is known as a farming community.  Vulcan's initial claim to fame was a row of grain elevators that were located alongside the town's train tracks.

This old mural in Vulcan depicts what these elevators looked like almost a century ago, with a string of nine traditional grain elevators.  The old elevators have disappeared and today only a single massive modern grain elevator exists in town.

Planters scattered around downtown Vulcan contain birdhouse-sized prairie elevators that remind people of this piece of farming history.
