Parkman Plaza on Boston Common

 

The three statues of Parkman Plaza on Boston Common, installed in 1961, are meant to illustrate what its makers considered three traits of Boston life, each represented by a statue: religion, learning and industry.

I can think of a few other traits of Boston's historic life, but perhaps Bostonians would be less happy to remember some of those. At any rate, these were dedicated to the memory of Dr George F. Parkman Jr. who died in 1908, leaving $5 million for the preservation of the Common and other Boston parks.

The plaza, which is just behind the information center that marks the beginning of the city's Freedom Trail, also contains a dedication stone that does mention Parkman, but seems designed mainly to hold the names of the politicians who were in office at the time of the dedication.
