French and German rail operators are planning a daily high-speed train between Paris and Berlin to start late next year, serving the two capitals with a low-carbon alternative to flying.
Both SNCF and DB operate Paris-Frankfurt services, but neither has believed there was a big enough market for a seven-hour journey. With increased attention on reducing carbon footprint and the increasing congestion of some European airports, they believe the time may have come.
Another rail option for the route may also come next year as part of the revival of night sleeper trains over the past few years, with a Paris-Berlin sleeper in the works. Also in the wings is a possible extension of Eurostar service to Cologne and beyond, which would make Germany reachable by train from London.
