Gazing out a 14th floor window from a doctor's waiting room, I was struck again by how many landscapes a city has—not only the first to mind, at ground level, but also the view from well above it. This time, it struck me that the world of rooftops is a 'ground level' in its own right.
Just as the street below is absent from these pictures, they contain sights hidden from those below. Did the designer of the buildings above mean the decoration for us, at the top? Did the builder of the penthouse below even imagine the crude tar roof that would someday cover his gentle curves?
