New vaults found in Bruges Cathedral

Recent archaeological work beneath the ancient cathedral of Bruge, Belgium has turned up some unexpected history, with several previously unknown burial vaults coming to light under the church, which dates to the 13th century.

Three vaults have been uncovered in the course of the work, two last spring and one more recently, containing burials, paintings and sacred objects. Although the oldest of the three has been dated to the 14th century, there may be even older ones found, from previous churches on the site.

Conservation measures for the contents were started immediately, and high-definition photos are being made to allow construction of an accurate 3-D model. There has been no word on when, or if, visitors will be allowed.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
