New threat to travelers: 'beak-pocketing'

While human criminals can give travelers vacation grief, we seldom see warnings about predatory birds—but here's one for you. Watch out for seagulls.

The newspaper Nice Matin reported yesterday that a seagull swooped down on a family of German tourists having drinks on a balcony and snatched a smartphone. Apparently, the phone was a little complex for the gull, which abandoned it nearby. It was recovered by the owner.

But that's only the tip of the wing, as it were. A Dutch gull, captured on video (below) is accused of foodnapping; it grabbed a diner's herring right out of his mouth.

Another gull has been implicated in the theft of potato chips from a local shop, not only violating laws, but also health warnings against salty snacks.

Perhaps healthier, but fairly futile, another gull is caught here stealing a golf ball.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
