Netherlands: Keukenhof in bloom again

The Keukenhof Gardens, one of the world's most spectacular display of flowers in bloom each Spring, is open again for the season, starting an eight-week run.

The gardens, near Amsterdam, attract over 1.5 million visitors each year to its dense displays of lilies, tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and crocuses. In preparation for the opening, gardeners planted some seven million bulbs last October.

The tradition started in 1949 as a trade show for the Dutch floral industry to show off its wares for customers around the world, and has grown ever larger. This year, however, it's getting some criticism: there's a campaign to reduce or eliminate the heavy use of pesticides at Keukenhof and in the industry as well.
