Natur Mort: Grim Beauty

We most often encounter 'still life,' or in French 'natur mort' in paintings but whether you think of it (almost contradictorily) as 'still life' or 'dead nature,' it is all around us, sometimes with a grim beauty that is visually arresting.

These pictures are from a long-ago ramble on a Maine beach, where driftwood as well as marine animals were part of the scene.

Nearby a composition that is 'still' but clearly still in 'life.'
