Munich airport takes Newark, JFK role

Europe's best airport is going to take a shot at improving two of America's worst. Munich Airport, named by Skytrax for 12 of the past 14 years, will take responsibility for new terminals at New York's JFK and Newark Liberty airports.

Munich Airport International will operate a new Terminal One at each of New York's biggest airports, both of which have long been down-rated for poor facilities and concessions, inconvenient transport and congestion and delays. New York's other airport, LaGuardia, is in the midst of a complete rebuild. The new Newark Terminal One is to open in 2022.

Despite Munich's success at home, though, some are skeptical they will be able to do the same in New York, where many decisions will require approval by the Port Authority, where funds available for airport improvements have not really increased in years and where some revenue streams, such as parking, are dropping. In the case of parking, a major revenue source, ride apps such as Uber are resulting in fewer people driving to the airport.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
