More low-cost flights to Paris

Norse Atlantic Airways, the new low-cost trans-Atlantic carrier that has picked up on some of the routes left behind by the failure of Norwegian, is adding New York-to-Paris flights to its schedule, starting in March.

The new flights will add to heating up competition on the route, now dominated by the joint venture of Delta with KLM/AirFrance and Virgin Atlantic. It will also go head-to-head with another lower-price carrier, JetBlue, which announced a few weeks ago that it will add Paris as its second European destination, flying from New York and later Boston.

It's also likely to set up a three-tier system of fares and services. JetBlue is generally priced above the ultra-low-cost carriers, but below the legacy lines such as Delta, and that has been true in the London market as well.

While Norse Atlantic is not as spartan as, say, Frontier or Spirit, its top class is premium economy, and just about everything but the seat is extra, while JetBlue's international service features roomier seating, free meals and WiFi. Like the legacy lines, it also has a first-class service called Mint on its overseas flights.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
