Mar. 8, 2017: Rachel the Piggy Bank at Pike Place Market

As a mascot for Pike Place Market, Rachel the Pig has been “bringing home the bacon” for The Market Foundation since 1986. She is located beneath the Public Market sign at the corner of Pike Place. She is a bronze cast piggy bank created by Georgia Gerber, a sculptor from Whidbey Island, Washington. Rachel receives roughly $9,000 annually in just about every type of world currency, which is collected by the Market Foundation to fund the Market's social services

Rachel 2Weighing in at 550 pounds, she is named after a real 750-pound pig who won the 1985 Island County Fair. Rachel was the inspiration behind the “Pigs on Parade” fundraiser throughout downtown Seattle in 2001 and again in 2007 for the Market’s centennial celebration. We had a fun time taking pictures and watching other people taking pictures and putting money in the bank. Please take a moment to check out this bank and put in a dollar or two to help support the foundation.
