Madrid Metro map gets new smarts

The maps feature in Madrid's app for its Metro users just got a bit smarter, with new features that tell riders in advance what temperature to expect in each car on the train and how crowded it is.

Sadly, while enabling riders to escape the worst and hottest crowds, it can't lower the temperature or make more space in a metro that is noted for how hot and crowded it gets at rush hours.

The addition, which is being rolled out on the system, line by line starting with Line 5, is part of a drive to modernize the system and improve utilization by more riders to reduce car travel and adverse environmental impact.

It also offers information and advice on planning journeys across the capital, information on lifts, escalators and disability accessibility, as well as information on season tickets and fares and allows cleaning alerts to be sent via the app.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
