A few months ago I visited the Jimmy Stewart Museum located on Philadelphia Street in his hometown of Indiana, Pennsylvania. The statue of Jimmy Stewart fronts the Indiana County courthouse. Since the classic movie “It’s A Wonderful Life” is a favorite it seems a good time to remember a little bit about this great actor and WWII combat pilot. Photos were strictly prohibited inside the museum, but in a weak moment, the onsite manager let me take just a couple to share.
James Maitland Stewart appeared in 92 movies and TV programs. One of which was the movie Harvey that included an invisible rabbit. He received too many film and honorary life achievement awards to mention. The Jimmy Stewart Museum houses movie posters, photos, awards, personal artifacts, a gift shop and an intimate 1930's era theatre in which his films are regularly shown. The Indiana airport is named in his honor. During World War II he was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses and four Air Medals, as well as the French French Croix de Guerre with bronze palm.
Indiana, Pennsylvania, is known as the “Christmas Tree Capital of the World” and the downtown historic district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
