JetBlue thinks future: Biofuel, bigger planes, Europe

JetBlue is thinking ahead on a number of fronts, including a contract for more biofuel, and plans to fly to Europe, possibly with larger planes, including widebodies.

This week, the airline signed a contract for 33-million gallons of "blended" fuel to be delivered over the next 10 years, mainly to its New York area operations. The fuel is 30% renewable bio-based fuel mixed with 70% traditional Jet-A, which is based on petroleum.

It's also evaluating, as it has for some time, adding flights to Europe. To do so, it would need to add to its fleet of A320-family planes. Its latest contract with Airbus includes the possibility of extended-range versions of the A-321, but JetBlue is also expected to consider the A330 or B787 if it makes the Europe decision.
