Japan tourism surging: up 21% in one year

With the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics on the horizon with even more visitors, Japan is already experiencing a heady tourism boom, with 2016 seeing over 24 million visitors, an uptick of over 21%, the third record year in a row.

According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, it's the most ever, and is 2.4 times higher than figures from 3 years ago. The boom is based in part on marketing to individual travelers, and in part to hosting more big international conferences and events.

Japan has been ramping up for the 2020 events, with new and renovated hotels, transit lines and even more visitor-friendly signage. And the JNTO has pitched in with a huge media resource of pictures and videos available both to potential visitors and to news media.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
