Japan Luxury Travel: Get on the bus, Gus!

A new luxury bus service in Japan aims to compete with the famous 'shinkansen' bullet trains by providing a slower but more convenient way on routes such as Tokyo to Osaka.

The Dream Sleeper bus, which provides each passenger with a private room and reclining bed-seat, promises a comfortable overnight ride, leaving Tokyo at 10:50 pm, well into the evening, and arriving in Osaka in time for breakfast.

The price is about a third higher than the shinkansen (18,000 yen vs 13,600) but it saves the cost of an overnight room, either in Tokyo before taking a train that leaves at 4:25 am, or in Osaka after taking a train that leaves at 8:45 and arrives at midnight.

Passengers get pillow and blanket, headphones and a variety of outlets and connections. The bus even has a restroom with one of the  famous Japanese electronic high-tech toilets.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
