Is 'green cruising' the future for cruise industry?

A Japanese NGO has sponsored the design of an environmentally-friendly cruise ship that it hopes will be sailing by 2020 emission-free, using a combination of solar sails and LNG gas.

The "Ecoship" design was put together by a team of engineers and experts called together by Peace Boat as a move toward meeting world climate needs. The ship would use such techniques as an aero-dynamic hull, a closed-loop water system that would operate heating and cooling without losing water, the retractable sails, and coatings to keep it from fouling the oceans.

There's no detail at this point of who would actually build and/or operate the ship, which sponsors hope to get support for at this week's Paris Climate Conference. The Cruise Lines International Association, representing dozens of cruise lines, stressed the importance of environmental considerations, while declining to comment on whether any of its members might be involved with the project.
