Ireland-to-Spain ferry adds whale-watching

Most passengers on the popular ferry route from Rosslare, Ireland to Bilbao, Spain are headed to vacations on sunny beaches, but this summer some of them will be taking a 3-night round trip to watch whales and dolphins.

Brittany Ferries is offering a 'Sea Safari' package starting at €279 per person. The one-way trip takes 30 hours, which will double plus turnaround time for the safari passengers. The price is for an inside 4-person cabin; for an extra €50 you get a window and a TV.

The package includes expert guides from a whale and dolphin protection charity, which will receive €60 from each ticket as a donation from the company.

The Celtic Sea and Bay of Biscay, which the ferries cross en route to Bilbao, provide "a unique opportunity” to watch whales and dolphins, the company says. “As shallow waters fall rapidly to depths of over 4,000 metres, it makes Biscay Bay one of the richest locations in the world for whale and dolphin-spotting.”

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
