Ireland gets another Greenway

A former rail route between Limerick and Kerry has re-opened as Ireland's newest greenway, a 40 km route for walking and cycling. The opening had been delayed by pandemic construction stoppages.

Preparation included the restoration of two 19th century station houses at Ardagh and Barnagh, the renovation of the 115m Barnagh tunnel, and a complete resurfacing of the trail. Also included was a refurbishing of Ferguson's Viaduct, a classic of cast-iron railroad construction.

The trail can be accessed at seven towns along the route. The €10 million cost of the project was shared among the Limerick City and County Council, Failte Ireland, the Department of Transport and the Department of Rural and Community Development.
