Ireland gears up for electric tourism

Ireland's tourism authority, Fáilte Ireland, is thinking ahead to a future when visitors on self-drive holidays in the Irish countryside and coasts will be using electric cars as Ireland pushes for a big shift toward sustainable driving.

The shift will require, among other things, a significant growth in the availability of charging stations around the country, especially in areas that are off the main roads but among the main tourist attractions, including such well-promoted routes as the Wild Atlantic Way and Ireland's Ancient East.

In its call for a study of needed changes, Fáilte said "The ultimate objective is to identify the infrastructure required and frequency of e-charging points to support sustainable car touring so that international and domestic visitors can travel freely and without range anxiety throughout Ireland."
