Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Mar 11, 2014: The Robin's Nest

DrY 99

Sometimes some of the most interesting things to photograph are right in your own backyard.  I've previously published photos featuring the ever changing skies in my home city of Calgary, which you can see here.  Today I thought I'd change the focal length of my camera's lens from distant images to a small miracle in the bushes by my patio.

We're always happy to see robins arrive because they are a sign of the coming spring!  One year they built a nest in one of the bushes and laid their eggs.  We carefully took a series of photos which I'm sharing with you today, generally under the worried watchful eye of at least one of the parent robins.  From those beautiful "robin's blue" eggs to young fledglings ready to leave the nest, we enjoyed watching the birth and growth of these young birds.

And then they were gone....a reminder to me that with my kids in college, my nest will soon be a lot emptier, too....

Quote of the day:

"The greatest gifts you can give your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence."
