We recently spent a month in Sicily touring around and seeing the sights. For the first 2 weeks we stayed in bed and breakfast style accommodation and the second 2 weeks we actually arranged to do a house-sit for an English couple who were themselves going away for a holiday.
The house we stayed in was in the tiny village of Testa dell'Acqua, which is in the south-east corner of Sicily, just west of the Baroque town of Noto. The farmhouse was over a 100 years old and was situated next to several other small farms. It was quaint and had original tiled floors, wooden beam ceilings and stone walls. It was only a short 10 minute walk to the main part of the village, which was basically a handful of shops and a population of around 300 people.
It allowed us a chance to experience life in a small rural village, meet a few locals and just basically ease back and put our feet up for a spell. We spent our time taking walks, having a morning coffee at the local bar/cafe (the only one in the village!), and exploring the nearby town of Noto. We had to brush up on our Italian as English wasn't spoken there at all.
For anyone wanting a holiday with a difference, I would highly recommend looking into the house-sitting option. It's fun, economical and a great way to meet people and experience the local atmosphere.
