Gullfoss, Iceland

Iceland is full of spectacular waterfalls and Gullfoss is amongst the largest. The name translates as 'Golden Falls'.

Gullfoss is located in the 'Golden Circle' of natural attractions, not far from the geothermal area of Haukadalur (home of the original 'geyser').

As the photo below shows, the falls involve several stages. The final one is a drop into a 32-metre deep crevice, running almost perpendicular to the flow of the river.

There are several viewpoints and decent paths leading to them.

Some involve getting quite wet from the spray - like the one below. Fortunately, I was wearing a rain jacket with a hood.

Under the right light conditions, the spray also creates a rainbow.

The final shot was taken from the plateau at the very top of the falls. You can see the crevice very clearly here. It has a total length of some 2.5 km.

There are facilities and a large car park at the site. Entrance is free.
