If there's such a thing as a map app war, Google has won it, walking away with 67% of the market, distantly followed by Waze at 12%—and Waze is also owned by Google. That leaves 11% for Apple Maps and a mere 8% for MapQuest.
Aside from its ubiquitous presence on Android phones, which certainly gives it a running start, a study by business news site Manifest says that users surveyed pointed to its extensive Street View project as a main reason to use it. Google also generally has more detail, down to footpath level, than the rest.
Other numbers from the study indicate that about 77% of smartphone users regularly use navigation maps, split about equally among those who use them before starting, those who use them en route and those who do both. While 90% use the maps mainly for driving directions, a growing number use them for cycling, walking and public transit directions.
