A Russian-owned AN-124, one of the largest planes around, is stuck at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, grounded by Ukraine war sanctions against Russia and running up parking bills of over C$1000 a day.
The plane, which had most recently delivered a cargo of Covid-19 tests to Canada, can't leave because that would involve flying in Canadian airspace, now banned to Russian planes. Three months or so into the war, the tab has now risen to over C$100,000.
The plane, popular among shippers needing either large bulk spaces or shipping large machinery, is ironically a product of Ukraine, where the Antonov aircraft company also built the now-destroyed even-larger AN-125.
