Gdańsk, Poland

Gdańsk is a city on the Baltic coast of northern Poland and the country's largest seaport. The port was one of the many stops on Viking Ocean Cruises' "Viking Homeland" cruise on the Viking Jupiter.

During medieval times Gdańsk was one of the most prosperous cities in the Hanseatic League, the mercantile powerhouse of the Baltic.

Our excursion focused on Old Town, a splendid mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and baroque styles—from the royal residence of Green Gate to the 15th-century Artus Court, a merchant's palace.

The Royal Road features rows of carefully-reconstructed tenements, including Uphagen's House (a modern-day Museum of Burgher Interiors) and the Main Town City Hall.

St. Mary's Basilica is a prominent site, as is the beautiful fountain topped with a statue of Neptune, the Roman god of the Sea and Ocean. The 1633 fountain emphasizes the city's unbreakable connection with the sea.

Gdańsk is also widely known as the city of amber. Everywhere are shops and jewelry stores selling the semiprecious gem for a few złoty (Polish currency) up to thousands of złoty.

Gdańsk is a beautiful and historic city with many stories to tell.
