The great cathedrals of Europe are extensively decorated with gargoyles and grotesques. These are figures of distorted creatures, gargoyles being installed around rain gutter drains. The most famous gargoyles and grotesques are those at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

When we visited Milan a few years back, I noted a number of interesting gargoyles and grotesques around the Duomo. Some of these are also on display at the Duomo Museum....
