For the Birds: Colombia takes the title

Colombia is definitely for the birds. This year and for the fourth time in a row, Colombia's birdwatchers spotted more species in one day than in any other country in the world.

The win came in the annual Global Big Day, organized by Cornell University's Ornithology Laboratory. Colombia counted 1440 species, finishing ahead of Peru, Ecuador and Brazil. More than 48,000 birdwatchers took part across the world.

Organizers say that logging these sightings provides important information to help preserve them. All photographs of the birds are uploaded to the eBird platform, which is publicly accessible for the purpose of conducting research for their conservation.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
