Feb. 22, 2019: Spot Catches a Cab

Spot, a 30-foot Dalmatian, appears to have had no trouble getting a New York City cab, but he's having a bit of trouble getting in.

P1130560The huge fiberglass-and-steel sculpture is actually parked outside the NYU Langone Children's Hospital in lower Midtown, where it's meant to provide a light-hearted welcome to visitors. The sculptor, Donald Lipski, says that “I like to think that the parents, the doctors, the nurses, the staff and the neighbors, will all be smitten by this playful, heroic young dog doing the impossible. Art has actual healing power.”

Funding for the sculpture came from the Hassenfeld family, donors to the hospital and owners of the Hasbro toy company.

And yes, it's a real taxi, a Prius donated by Toyota, but without engine, transmission or seats. But the lights and wipers are there, and may eventually be turned on to add to the fun.
