Fat Bear Week has a Winner

The annual Fat Bear contest in Alaska's Katmai National Park has produced a new champion, a female bear named 128 Grazer, selected by popular voted among a number of about-to-hibernate bears who have filled themselves on local salmon for the winter.

“Grazer is a particularly defensive mother bear who has successfully raised two litters of cubs,” according to Fat Bear Week’s website. “She often preemptively confronts and attacks much larger bears – even large and dominant adult males – in order to ensure her cubs are safe.”

The title, by the way, doesn't necessarily go to the fattest bear in the park; the winner among all the fat bears is determined by a fan vote as videos and pictures of the candidates appear over the fall weeks.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
