Everest base camp gets high-speed WiFi

In case you were wondering if you'd be able to stream your favorite shows while climbing Mount Everest, you can relax: Chinese mobile operators and equipment manufacturers have installed ultra-gigabit WiFi at a base camp 5200 meters above sea level.

China Mobile and Huawei worked together on the project, which links the Chinese base camp to the world with a system based on FTTR, or Fiber to the Room, which is paired with Power-over-Fiber that provides both the signal and power for devices.

The system was installed mainly to provide service for the base camp management and for researchers who are monitoring weather and air conditions and monitoring devices installed to support environmental conservation. However, by next year it will be available to climbers and visitors as well.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
