Short-term rental platforms such as Airbnb will now be required to share more data with cities and regions across the European Union under a new law given final approval last week by the European Parliament.
Studies have repeatedly shows a correlation between short-term rentals and higher neighborhood rents, and many cities have struggled to find a balance in which tenants and owners can earn income by part-time rentals without taking significant numbers of apartments off the market.
The effort to do that, and craft workable regulations has been hampered by inconsistent data reporting and reluctance to provide some types of data. In addition to providing more, and more consistent, data, the platforms will be required to perform more random checks to identify illegal rentals.
