Dutch Stairs, Amsterdam

With two nights in Amsterdam left on my trip, I chose an inexpensive small hotel, the Nadia, with a great location: Dam Square two blocks one way, the Westerkerk only a block the other.

What I hadn't expected was that, when I opened the street door, I'd be looking straight up, two flights, of beautiful, narrow and very steep stairs. I was more than pleased that the hotel sends a staff member down to carry up bags.

Here's the same stairway, viewed from the top, and the next flight up to my room, still steep, but not as long.

In keeping with the spirit of getting a lot into a small space, the rooms are quite compact as well, but well-equipped and comfortable. The bathroom was small enough that sitting meant shoulder contact with both door and sink, but the shower was excellent.

Despite the idea the sign might give about the size of the hotel, it's actually one of nearly a dozen small hotels sandwiched into that block, all starting above retail stores on the lower floors.  20220218_103329

Sadly, I only stayed one night; Storm Eunice, whose gray beginnings can be seen in the picture was headed in, and transit and trains were shutting down in early afternoon. I moved to a hotel near the airport to be ready for my flight.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
