'Dolce Vita' fountain still draws swimmers

Rome's Trevi Fountain, featured in dozens of films including the 1960 classic La Dolce Vita, is still getting its share of summer swimmers, despite big fines imposed by Rome police.

In the latest incident, a 26-year-old from Spain was fined €450 for an early morning dip in the 18th century fountain. Two months ago, two Dutch tourists had to pay €1000, and many others are caught each summer.

However, the city has abandoned a plan put forward a couple of years ago to surround the city's fountains with metre-high glass and steel walls to keep unruly visitors out; arts and heritage experts called the idea "foolish."
