Delta Airlines is trying out a new boarding scheme, and unlike all the others all the airlines have proposed over the years for efficiency, this one is based on public safety and social distancing for the few who are still traveling.
At least for now, Delta is boarding flights from the back to the front, limiting chances of passengers passing or contacting each other, is spreading passengers out in the plane (possible with low passenger numbers) and is requiring passengers to stay in their seats at the terminal until their row—no groups now—is called.
But, of course, there are flaws in the plan, and one is big. Delta will still allow its Delta One, Diamond Medallion and first class passengers to board first. Except on large planes where premium passengers turn left and the rest of us turn right, that defeats the whole purposed, because everyone else will have to pass those premium folks.
But that aside, perhaps Delta, and the rest, could keep this plan past its planned May 31 expiration, and even point out to the premiums that their status may get them on the plane first, but it won't take off until the rest of us are aboard, and any delay they create is on all of us.
