Columbia Ice Field, Alberta Canada

Back in 2005, I took a trip from Canmore, Alberta to Jasper, and along the way, we stopped at the Columbia Icefield. This is the largest glacier in the Rocky Mountains, and sits at the juncture of the Banff and Jasper National Parks.

After stopping at the Visitor Center, which offered both a good view of the icefield and an amazing perspective on how much it had shrunk over the past century, we headed onto one of the specially-built tour buses for the trip out onto the ice. Along the way, we passed one of the original transports that took visitors onto the ice.

This ice filed is still immense, and, between the size of the mountains and white expanse, it is easy to lose perspective.
