O'Brien's Tower, built in 1835 by a visionary local landowner and politician, Cornelius O'Brien, with the idea of attracting visitors to the area, has been re-opened with new staircases and, most importantly, new waterproofing. O'Brien could not have imagined that the Cliffs would someday draw 1.6 million visitors a year.
In addition to the tower renovation, there are new seasonal shuttles from nearby towns for visitors without cars or who simply want to avoid lines at the huge parking lots. To help spread visitors out across the day, the local authorities are also trying discounts off the admission fee for early and late visitors.
