A full-size replica of the Titanic, copied down to the door handles from the doomed original, is about to open at a land-locked theme park in Sichuan province, offering overnight stays, dinner included, for about $150 per person.
The $153 million replica, six years in the making, is the project of Su Shaojun, a Chinese energy entrepreneur who sold most of his holdings to raise funds for the project. Su became obsessed with the 1997 movie which was wildly popular in China and moved ahead with the project.
The operation includes a replica of the Southampton port area from which the ship sailed on its doomed voyage and, on the buses that bring guests on-site, a sound system that constantly loops Celine Dion's Titanic theme song "My Heart Will Go On."
Although some critics doubted the attraction would draw overnight guests anxious to repeat a disaster, interest has been high, especially with the recent release of a Chinese movie "The Six," which tells the story of a group of Chinese travelers on the ship, of whom six survived.
