Chamonix, France

Chamonix is one of the oldest ski resorts in France and best known for its location just below Mont Blanc.  Mont Blanc is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. I’ve been there a few times and had taken the cable car to the 3,842 m (12,605 ft) Aiguille du Midi. Constructed in 1955, it was then the highest cable car in the world and remains the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world.  Underneath the mountain is a nearly 7-1/2 mile tunnel connecting France with Italy.

A small commune first mentioned in the 11th century, the first Winter Olympic Games were held at Chamonix in 1924.  At the Mont Blanc summit you can purchase specially marked Mont Blanc pens. Mont Blanc is climbed by nearly 20,000 alpinists a year, but unfortunately there have been more climbing deaths here than any other mountain in the world.

If you have vertigo, like me, you will have to suffer through the long vertical cable car ride.  However, there are many relaxing places in Chamonix once you return to the bottom.  Once we left Chamonix by car, we moved on to another gorgeous location of Annecy.
