Two more Canadian lighthouses have been given heritage status, bringing the total to 102. The two latest are both in Atlantic Canada, one in Nova Scotia and the other on Prince Edward Island.
The status, under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act means the government is committed to their preservation as symbols of the country's maritime heritage. It also makes funds available to keep them maintained.
The two additions a a sort of Mutt and Jeff pair; the Annandale Rear Range Lighthouse is the tallest on Prince Edward Island, while the Cape George lighthouse is only two stories high, guarding the entrance to an inlet.
Cape George light was built in 1950 to replace one built in 1875. Members of one family, the Murrays, operated the light for its entire 94-year history until it was automated in 1969. The Annandale light was built in 1901 to replace the 1898 original destroyed by a storm in 1900.
