Visitors and Brussels locals can soon feel a bit less like the characters on this sign, with an agreement between the city and 24 bars and restaurants that are opening their toilets free of charge to the public. They'll be marked by window decals or signs like this:
The restaurants, most in Brussels but some in nearby suburbs, are expected to be joined soon by at least 20 others that have said they are interested in participating. Under the arrangement, the restaurants receive an allowance from the city to cover costs of cleaning and access. Brussels hopes to have 70 places on board by the end of 2022.
In addition to the 'guest toilets' the city is taking other measures to relieve the public, including more public toilets, portable toilets and mobile urinals, or "uritrottoirs."
